For nearly 25 years I have sensed a call to urban ministry although it has never worked out that this has been full time. I have lived in Birmingham since 1989 and have worshipped at different UPA churches. We (my husband Paul and I) spent five years in Aston where he was Curate at the parish church. We are now at Christ the King Erdington, two struggling churches on Council Estates in Birmingham. I am a lay leader there and involved in youth work. I am also on the management group for the Deanery Missioner and the steering group for a different Deanery's youth fresh expression project. We live just up the road from Spaghetti Junction. I have a long term interest in urban ministry and my doctorate (with the Urban Theology Unit) was titled Supporting Urban Youth Workers but has been published as A Theology for Urban Youth Work (pretty much in its original form). It was a study of some urban youth work within Youth for Christ followed by a theological exploration drawing on an understanding of 'incarnational', Bonhoeffer's writings and the doctrine of kenosis (Phil 2:7). I have worked for Youth for Christ for nearly 25 years, currently as the Director of the Midlands Centre for Youth Ministry where we run courses at FE, undergraduate and postgraduate level incorporating professional qualifications in youth work. I am a trustee of Frontier Youth Trust.
