Pope Benedict says that Purgatory as an instant in time rather than a geographical place

Check out this quote in a recent papal encyclical:

“'Purgatory' is simply purification through fire in the encounter with the Lord, Judge and Saviour."

This looks much more like my theology of judgement/revelation than the usual Catholic approach to Purgatory...seems to much more faithfully follow a literal reading of 1 Cor 3:12-15, and creates a lot of distance with medieval images of Purgatory like Dante's.

You can find the reference in "Saved Through Hope" (Spe Salvi) a recent Papal encyclical. I discovered the rapprochement in Tom Wright's recent book Surprised by Hope.

Was at a recent catholic charismatic mens conference here at Duns Scotus Catholic seminary in Bearsden, Glasgow.  Had a great time - Kenny Borthwick from CLAN was speaking.  I think discovering links with Catholic charismatic brothers and sisters in Glasgow is going to be the way I tend to express God's call to ecumenism and unity as I work stuff out here in Possilpark.

Hope to visit the Community of the Risen Christ in Queens Park soon...several of the members there came to this conference...
